A SENSE OF PLACE: CERAMICS BY LES MANNINGS

VHS 13min 1988
This video blends the artist's personal statement of aesthetics with stunning landscape photography of the Rocky Mountains. Music compliments the visuals, shimmering water and aspen leaves in sunlight, the rhythm of working on the potter's wheel.
By throwing cylindres as "working blanks" Manning alters conventional forms, inspired by the pattern of colored clay revealed by trimming. "On making these vessels, the main concept is to capture the larger space of the landscape in teh smaller space of the vessel," he says.
I found this short video enjoyable to watch, of interest primarily to experienced potters for its aesthetic point of view. {Catherine Merril, Studio Potters Network Newsletter}

A documentary of Alberta clay artist, John Chalke, and the year spent on the design and construction of a woodburning kiln on his land in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Infused with the characteristic humour of John Chalke, the video touches on the relationship between the artist, his work and the land. Witness a threechamber climbing kiln take form, the experimental features incorporated in the design, and the canopy of nature surrounding the site.
