"Glazing Techniques" (60 min) After describing the
preparation of a bisque piece for glazing, Carole demonstrates
two simple techniques: single and twotone dipping, overlapping
two glazes to create a third color and pouring. two other potters
then demonstrate underglazing on greenware, using wax resist for
decorative purposes and onglaze decoration.
"Clay Alternatives" (75 min) looks at alternatives
to throwing: Another potter forms a bud vase around a papertowel
roll, and also alters a bowl at the leatherhard stage by carving
the surface and cutting into the rim. A squared tray is constructed
by draping a slab into a wooden frame, then decorated with impressing,

THE POTTERS OF MATA ORTIZ
VHS Col 47min Mexico Coffin
keinerlei Keramikproduktion gab.
Verkaufspreis: US$ 30 (US$ 50 für Institutionen) plus Versand.
In the past several years the village of Mata Ortiz, in northern
Mexico, has become known as a major pottery producing center.
Using raw materials from the natural environment and without the
use of potters' wheels or kilns, the 300 or so potters produce
exquisite, thin walled decorative pottery. The intricate designs
and forms were originally inspired by the prehistoric Casas Grandes
ceramics found scattered over the area.
This revival of the Casas Grandes ceramic tradition, a lost
art for more than 500 years, can be attributed to Juan Quezada,
who, until his discovery by an anthropologist in 1976, was an
unknown, self taught potter living in Mata Ortiz, a village with
no previous ceramic tradition.

MAKING POTS ON THE WHEEL: TECHNIQUE, FORM AND FUNCTION (6 TAPES)
VHS Col. Sengl. 3040min USA 1993
Making Pots on the wheel, a sixtape series, features Jerry
Horning, a potter and educator for nearly 30 years, demonstrating
and explaining the techniques necessary to make pots which function
well and express one's own personal aesthetic. Initially, when
dealing with the most basic steps, the pacing is slow and involves
repetition, as is necessary for beginners. However, as the series
progresses (each tape deals with new shapes and skills), the pace
quickens and deft editing eliminates extraneous detail, so the
viewer is able to focus on the new material.
This video is an excellent resource for both beginning potters
and institutions teaching ceramics (high school on up). It should
also be of interest to more advanced potters for the aesthetic
point of view. A 100page workbook supplement is also available.{Studio

THE ART OF CLAY PRINTING
VHS 68min USA
Verkaufspreis: US$ 39,95 plus

Pulling monoprints from clay "has given me infinite avenues
of artistic expression" states artist Mitch Lyons in this
howto video. After briefly discussing the tools needed, Lyons
begins by spreading out a 1/4inchthick slab of stoneware over
a sealed rectangle of plywood. Once the clay has dried to leather
hard, he coats it with five or six layers of kaolin slip, explaining
that the color is more intense on the white slip than on the stoneware.
To mix the colored clays (which will be applied to the slipcoated
slab), Lyons stirs dry pigments into water. Some are standard
ceramic oxides, but others are organic pigments used by painters.
Kaolin slip is then added to each pigment mixture.
Lyons demonstrates several different methods of applying imagery
to the slab. When the slab is decorated to his satisfaction, he
inlays everything one last time before pulling the print on interfacing
material purchased at a fabric store. He lightly sprays the slab
and the interfacing with water. Positioned on the decorated slab,
the interfacing is pressed with the rolling pin.
After the interfacing is removed from the slab, it is hung
to dry for a couple of hours. The slab can then be printed from
again, or recoated with layers of white slip and a new design
begun. {Ceramics Monthly}

JATUN MOLINO A POTTERY VILLAGE IN THE UPPER AMAZON BASIN
VHS 30min Col Ecuador Molinaro
Joe Molinaro's beautifully observed video shows the fully intergrated
social and working life of the Quichua Indians who live in the
remote village of Jatun Molino on the banks of the Rio Bobanaza
in Ecuador. The video is a sensitive evocation of a traditional
way of life which has evolved and survived for many centuries.
It is well worth seeing for the ingenious making, decorating and
firing techniques used by these Quichua Indian woman potters who
achieve so much with so little. {Ceramic Review}

BETTY WOODMAN: THINKING OUT LOAD
VHS USA Woodman
In diesem Interview
die sie gerade beschreibt.{Studio Potter Network Newsletter}
The boldly colored sculptural vessels of Betty Woodman have
been part of our ceramic scene for almost 30 years. Now, in this
interview with critic John Perrault, we learn of the influences
and experiences that have led and directed her over those years.
The dialogue is often dubbed over scenes of her working in the
studio, along with shots of her finished work from past years,
so that we can see the concepts she describes take shape before
our eyes.
